Looking Into The Rose
This set of paintings contemplate the unbroken beauty of life through the ages, an extraordinary phenomenon that we humans not only get to experience but have the opportunity to pause and acknowledge. Humans will not always exist in this cognizant form, on this extraordinary planet, but the energy of life will continue unbroken and beautiful.
The following (abridged) Thich Nhat Hanh quote expresses the nature of existence that I hope these paintings will ignite in the viewer.
Suppose we look deeply at a rose. What do we see in the rose? We see a cloud, because we know that without the cloud, there would be no rain, and without the rain, the rose couldn’t grow. Next, we can see sunshine, which is also crucial for the rose to grow. If you took the sunshine and the cloud out of the rose, there would be no rose left. If we continue like this, we see many other non-rose elements within the rose, including the minerals, the soil, the farmer, the gardener, and so on. The whole cosmos has come together to produce the wonder we call a rose. A rose cannot be by herself alone. A rose has to inter-be with the whole cosmos. No matter what we look at, if we can see that it is made up of everything in the universe that is not itself, then we touch the true reality of that thing.
About emrie
Emrie has always been drawn to taking her experience of the world, contemplating it, and then expressing it through creative means. For a long time, that expression was through writing the human story, but after a while she found writing had her existing too much inside of her own head. Emrie started painting as a way to force herself to look closely and immersively at the world outside of the human story. The sky, the clouds, and the smell of roses were some of the first things that truly reminded her of the awesome fortune of being alive. Oil paints have been her favorite material for visual expression as they blend and build as well as leave time for change before becoming fixed in their final form.
